Penn Standard Colada

Smoked: Penn Standard Colada

Penn Standard Colada has a slick looking dark Pennsylvania Broadleaf wrapper on top of a Nicaraguan binder and a combination Nicaraguan/Pennsylvania filler. It’s a medium bodied, medium-full strength cigar start to finish.

Flavor profile: Mostly influenced by the Broadleaf wrapper, musky, slate, metal (steel, lead), vegetal notes, wood, pepper, earth and even a puff or two of floral notes. The steely, mineral, earth and pepper tastes dominates the entire smoke. The retrohale is chalky, vegetal and peppery.

This cigar has a surprisingly light amount of smoke output. I would have expected more from a Broadleaf. The construction has some issues. It was tough to keep this stick lit. I couldn’t rest it on the port for long before it would go out, requiring a relight. The draw started to tighten up during the second third. Out comes the cigar pick, but even after a ream to open the draw the cigar wouldn’t stay lit. The ash was brittle, flaky and fell off constantly.

The Penn Standard has some interesting flavors, but it’s very one dimensional and the flavors never transitioned nor ever really meshed into a balanced taste. I found it a tad bitter at times with the metal and pepper dominating the other flavor notes.

All in all, it was a unique experience and not bad for a budget cigar. It’s a very different flavor. Even the combination mineral and vegetal notes were not like those found in the Caldwell Lost & Found aged tobaccos. Try it once – especially if you’ve never smoked a PA Broadleaf.
