Olmec Claro

Smoked: Olmec Claro

Olmec Claro is a box-pressed toro available in two wrappers – San Andres maduro and claro. I chose the claro based on accolades on the cigar from friends and my friendly, neighborhood tobacconist. The name and depiction on the band are a tribute to the earliest known Mesoamerican civilization. There’s 3 years aging on the filler tobacco Foundation has impressed me so far with their cigar lines so let’s see how the Olmec performs.

The flavors hit you immediately – Spice, pepper, cedar with hints of pine (you really get this aroma on the retorhale), earth, pecans/walnuts, a slight hint of coffee, cream & vanilla blending with the nuttiness to create something like Cracker Jack meets toffee glazed nuts. The balance of sweet and savory is really in play during the second third. I’m getting notes of bread, sometimes sourdough; in the mix at this point.

The construction is spot on perfect. Good open cold draw, more than adequate smoke output and one of the most consistent, even burn lines I’ve seen on a cigar in a while. Just put my torch away never having to use it for one touchup.

Olmec Claro is a very enjoyable medium-full body, medium-full strength cigar crafted with the precision I’ve come to expect from Foundation.
