Let’s first take a little trip down Maduro memory lane. Cigars featuring Maduro wrappers were first created around 50 to 60 years ago when brands and cigar artisans began experimenting with new fermentation and blending techniques to keep up with the ever-evolving tastes of cigar smokers.

There’s no question that Maduro wrappers cloak many of today’s most talked about premium stogies. But, before the Cigar World team recommends some of the best Maduro cigars you should add to your humidor, we’re going to take a sec to define what Maduro wrappers are, and clear up some common misconceptions around them.

What is a maduro wrapper?

The Maduro wrapper, otherwise referred to as capa negra, has been a go-to selection for many seasoned cigar smokers. There are many shades of Maduro, such as Colorado Maduro, Oscuro, and Double Maduro. Normally, they’re an intensely dark and oily leaf that garnered this aesthetic due to extensive aging in a controlled environment. More the reason to call it a Maduro, because in Spanish, that translates to mature or ripe.

Are maduro cigars strong?

One of the greatest misconceptions about Maduro cigars is that they’re always strong. Now, they can be strong, but they are more so known for producing a full bodied sweetness.

In addition to an overall sweetness, Maduro cigars feature bountiful notes of earth and wood. So remember, don’t always judge a book by its cover, just because Maduro cigars are some of the darkest looking cigars out there, it doesn’t always translate to them being the strongest.
