#1 A Good Cutter

There are three types of traditional cigar cutters: punch cut, V-cut, and guillotine (straight) cutters. For beginners, we recommend starting with a guillotine cutter since they’re the most straightforward and versatile. Though, we do like having a punch cutter on your keychain for “emergencies.” In a pinch, you can also use scissors or even a knife to cut a cigar. 

Useful add-on: Cigar Draw Tool. Smoke for long enough and — inevitably — you’ll encounter a cigar with a plugged draw. In such instances, you can choose to 1) struggle through the cigar, 2) give up on the cigar, or 3) use a plugged-draw tool to try to remove the obstruction. Cigar draw tools are great to have on hand if you get unlucky with a cigar. Plus, they’re easy to use.

#2 A Quality Lighter

There is no substitute for a top-of-the-line butane lighter. Butane lighters are simple to use and highly effective. Best of all, they work to give your cigar an even burn even in adverse conditions (I.E., when it’s windy outside). Don’t get us wrong, we appreciate lighting a cigar the traditional way with matches as well. But if we had to pick one method to light a cigar, we’d go with a butane lighter.

Useful add-on: Butane Refills. For safety purposes, butane lighters aren’t always sold with the gas in them. So consider stocking up on butane fuel refill bottles as well. Filling a lighter with butane is fairly simple, but make sure to follow the instructions closely to ensure your safety.

#3 A Humidor 

A humidor is a big purchase in a cigar lover’s journey. Buying a humidor will enable you to enjoy more than the odd cigar here or there; instead, humidors let cigar enthusiasts store dozens (or even hundreds) of cigars in a safe, well-regulated place for years. When purchasing your first humidor, we recommend going for something relatively small and cost-effective. Acrylic and desktop humidors are great options, easy to set up/maintain, and will often hold 20-50 cigars. Oh, and they make great gifts for the budding cigar lover in your life. 

In the meantime, you can use any sealed container to hold cigars while you figure out your long-term humidor situation. 

Useful add-on: Humidification Packs. In order for your humidor to work properly, you’ll need to season it and include humidification packs based on the number of cigars you store in it.

#4 Cigar Ashtray 

There’s an art to ashing a cigar, and a cigar-specific ashtray is the ideal vessel for ash. Not only do many cigar ashtrays feature beautiful designs, but they also include large enough “holders” to fit a cigar. It may not be the first item on your purchase list, but be sure to pick up a cigar ashtray before you light up your next smoke.
