Cabinet Humidor Humidity

Hey guys, new to the post but I've been smoking cigars for 40 years.

I moved from Kentucky (High RH) to Northern Colorado (Low RH) a few years ago. I have a tall cabinet humidor (64” tall, 15” wide, 14” deep). I have a hydro XL placed on the center shelf. I have a Xikar remote hygrometer that is calibrated to within 1%+-RH.

I didn’t have a problem keeping the RH in the cabinet to 68% RH in KY but I do in Colorado. I just started to move my hygrometer around to different shelfs in my humidor and am finding that the top shelf of the humidor is 61% RH, the drawers directly below the Hydro XL are 56% - 60%. Seems odd that the top shelf RH is much lower than the middle shelf where the Hydro XL is because humidity is supposed to rise???

Approximately 10 years ago I bought 3 mesh bags of Heartfelt beads 70% RH. I don’t tend to the bags as often as I probably should. I also removed the foam in my Hydra XL and replaced it with SAP beads which I have to add water about monthly.

I’m currently taking the beads I have out of the mesh begs and putting a couple of tablespoons into ramekins and placing them on each shelf and into each drawer.

I’m currently looking into some fans that I can place in my humidor that will come on about every 15 minutes for just a minute or so to move some air around the cabinet.

What are your thoughts on replacing the SAP beads in my Hydro XL beads, how many ounces/pounds would you recommend.

Can anyone recommend a timer that would allow fans to come on every 20 minutes for a minute or two>

Any other suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim

Following this for sure, I dont have a big humidor like that (newer to cigars) but am in Colorado as well and my stuff dries out way too quick.

4 or 5 320 gram Boveda packets would probably work a lot better for you. Put one on every level. Also, humidity is more dense than air so naturally it settles, not rises

Yes, you are very right we have two homemade ones some what similar to yours and they are using the ones that have a water line hooked to them kind of like ice cube maker in a fridge! I will take some images...
