Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 is a stick I may have smoked some years back. It was recommended recently by a friend. So…why not?
The Vintage 1990 is box pressed using Dominican & Nicaraguan filler, a Nicaraguan binder and a Honduran Maduro Broadleaf wrapper with a slightly oily sheen, visible seams and small veins. The bands are gold on dark red. The primary features the Rocky Patel logo. The secondary band pronounces it a “Vintage 1990.” Simple. To the point.
Cedar, earth, light roast coffee, cream, mild pepper, grass, and a hint of cocoa and peanuts. Oak overtakes the cedar late in the second third. There were a few puffs of licorice during the final third. It also turned a tad harsh and bitter during the final third. The stick weights in at mild to medium-mild bodied and strength.
Excellent open draw, solid smoke production, a wavy burn line that needed much attention, and black and white, grey ash stacked up and held fairly well until tapped off.
Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 looks dark and bold, but it smokes like a mild Connecticut shade. It’s one of the mildest Maduros I’ve ever smoked. I get the impression of well-aged tobacco, which I also associate with more full bodied smoked. I’m not a big Rocky Patel fan, but I do like this cigar. Thanks, Ron, for the recommendation.
