Onyx Reserve

Smoked: Onyx Reserve

Onyx Reserve is another cigar I found in the shops and lounges of northeast Ohio when traveling there a decade or so ago. Haven’t found it here since then – until last week.

The Onyx Reserve is packed with Nicaraguan, Dominican and Peruvian filler, a Nicaraguan binder and a light sandpaper rough, oily, black Connecticut Broadleaf maduro wrapper with barely visible veins.

Oak, mild pepper, toast, creaminess, semi-sweet chocolate, almonds & walnuts, and leather By the second third, a chalky, steely metal note creeps into the background. It’s a note I associate more with some Pennsylvania Broadleafs, but here it is in a Connecticut Broadleaf. There are occasional hints of cedar, coffee and floral during the second third.

Tight draw that opened up some with the Perfect Draw – took a few more occasional toothpick pokes to keep it open. The smoke output was generous. The dark and light grey ash was flaky but held fairly well. The burn line was wavy from the start.

Onyx Reserve is a rich, bold, medium-full-bodied and strength smoke. I liked the cigar 10 years ago. I still do.

I smoked that cigar in the early 2000's and recently picked up a 5 pack on sale. You are rigjht still a very nice blend and quality construction.
