Blackbird Unkind Toro uses Nicaraguan Corojo & Criollo 98 and Pennsylvania filler, a Dominican binder and covered in an oily slightly toothy Brazilian Cubra wrapper with visible seams and heavy on the veinage.
The band is typical Blackbird with the “Blackbird Cigar Co.” lettering branding the top in black and silver, the Blackbird bird logo in the corner and the rest of the band announcing in cursive “Unkind” sideways on a purple background. Interesting sidenote: Blackbird also released a cigar called the Raven. A group or flock of ravens is called an Unkindness. That may have to do with the mythology behind ravens as being bad luck or their poor parenting skills – or so the story goes.
Cedar, walnuts & cashews, bittersweet chocolate, creamy caramel, and tingly pepper that diminishes into a lightly spicy flavor and the nuttiness includes toasted almonds by the second third, There’s a hint of orange citrus by that point as well. The retrohale remains heavy on the pepper.
Good open draw, reasonably good smoke output, white ash that held for a short time, generally flake, and during the first third a helter skelter, all over the place burn line – I assume I’ll owe a copyright fee to Apple Corps for that reference. The birm line magically straighten out with the assistance of a few touchups and remained even for the rest of the smoke. The ash also behaved and actually held firm to the nub. Although an unwelcome distraction, the initial burn line issues did not impede my enjoyment of the smoke.
I found the chocolate and caramel combining with the wood, nuts and spice worked quite well. Blackbird Unkind is quite kind to the palate – balanced, complex, tasty, delicious, Unkind is the best of the Blackbirds I’ve smoked so far.
