Blackbird Crow

Smoked: Blackbird Crow

Blackbird Crow Robusto is made with Nicaraguan and Pennsylvania Broadleaf filler, a Dominican Habano binder and covered with a toothy Mexican San Andres wrapper. The cigar sports a large red band with “Crow” scrawled sideways. It’s a cigar I have heard good things about for a few years. It was actually released in 2016 but never caught my attention until recently. It kept selling out in cigar shops and online, but I finally secured a stick. Let’s see what all the buzz – or the screech – is all about.

Oak, earth, chalky mineral notes, leather, coffee, chocolate and vague hints of kitchen spice and maybe some citrus and raisins. The flavors are fine, but lack depth. I’m waiting for more flavor, transition and complexity. It’s lacking in these components. The oak morphs into more cedar wood notes by the final third. So I’ll give it that bit of transition. It’s full bodied, medium strength.

Leather, earth and wood are driving the flavor profile. Hey, better than pepper behind the driver’s wheel. There is some there among the spices but it’s muted. The chocolate, coffee and hints of fruit do help balance the smoke and add some complexity. On the downside, there’s a bitter taste interferes with the final third. Jusr enough to complain about.

Wrapper crack early Some cigar glue and patience healed it as the burn line made its way past the initially undetected soft spot. Otherwise, solid construction – nice open draw, generous smoke production, even burn line despite the wrapper crack, and ash that held firmly through the nub.

I’ve been intrigued by the Blackbird Crow for some time and had a tough time tracking one down. Cigar shops and online sites were sold out even when it was supposedly available. I thought there must be a reason. It was an enjoyable smoke worth the effort to find it.
