Smoked: Black Label Trading Company Memento Mort Lonsdale

Black Label Trading Company Memento Mort Lonsdale is a actually a short wide Lonsdale tipping the weights and measure scales at 6.5 x 46. If you convert it to metric….it’s still not a standard Lonsdale. A cigar named Memento Mort…with a pigtail? Only in Central America! It’s made with Nicaraguan filler, an Ecuador Habano binder and covered with a toothy Pennsylvania Broadleaf wrapper with visible veins and seams.

The band is black with a white skull and lettering that reads “Memento” in gothic script above the skull and “Mort” in black on the forehead of the skull. Church symbols and the sundial type logo are on either side.

You have to give it up for the cigar band designs. They may be a bit morbid, but they are eye-catching and unique. Black and white medieval script crossed bones and skulls abound. The Memento Mort amplifies the visual theme. Bela Lugosi should have a BLTC series named for him. Memento Mort translates to Remember You Must Die. As we are reminded during Lent, “remember you are dust and to dust you shall return.” My Will & Trust provides that when I die, I must be buried with a small batch boutique cigar in the coffin, a V cutter and a Vertigo lighter for my journey into the afterlife. Takes on a whole new meaning to “ashes to ashes, dust to dust.” But, I digress.

Torch to foot – the cigar comes charging out of the gate with pepper, spices, earth, leather and wood, then adds mixed nuts, herbal notes, vegetal notes, honey graham, and hints of dark chocolate. The honey and graham cracker-ish notes turn spicier a la nutmeg or cinnamon by the second third. I notice some mustiness, mineral and floral on a few puffs. There is nuanced complexity to a full array of balanced flavors in this cigar. The only minor issue I have - the retrohale assaults your sinuses with heavy pepper and some charred wood and vegetal aromas. There’s sort of a barbecue aroma going on here. It’s medium-full bodied and medium strength.

Decent open draw, good smoke production, even burn line, and grey ash that held often to over half inch before falling or tapping off.

The flavors are plentiful, nuanced in transition and intriguingly complex. Black Label Trading Company has become masterful at blending small batch boutique sticks. Memento Mort is no exception. I like this cigar a lot.
