Smoked: Aganorsa Leaf Rare Leaf

Aganorsa Leaf Rare Leaf Reserve uses Nicaraguan Criollo filler, a Nicaraguan binder and is covered in a oily rustic umedium brown San Andres wrapper with a little bit of tooth and some visible veins. The tobacco is supposedly from special lots harvested on Aganorsa’s best farms. Thus, making it rare leaf, I assume.

The flavor parade begins with cedar, a vegetal/hay/grassy earthiness, leather, chocolate, some cream, and mild spice – hardly a note of pepper. It transitions to almonds and walnuts, hints of citrus, and the spice spinkles in some nutmeg. I get occasional puffs of something like pancake syrup and now rhere is a touch of pepper. By the end of the second third, you get dark roast coffee/espresso and a touch of herbal notes By the final third, the spice turns peppery and Asian – like dialing up a 7 at a Thai restaurant. That said, there is some cream, vanilla and whiffs of citrus to balance that quite well. Plenty of flavors, transitions and complexity. This is a medium-full bodied and strength cigar.

The draw was a bit tight – a tad more resistance than for which I care. (English teachers should be proud of my grammar), could have used more smoke production, the grey ash was flaky but managed to hang on (or dangle at times) to a half inch.

Aganorsa Leaf Rare Leaf takes its time to unveil all of its flavors and hit that balanced sweet spot. Flavors change and attenuate. This cigar is a wild ride. But it’s worth the wait when you get there. This is a fine cigar.
