A Tale of Two Corojos: Punch Rare Corojo 25th Anniversary
Anniversaries mean a lot in the cigar industry. Many brands schedule their most prestigious releases to coincide with important anniversaries in their history. In fact, it’s often harder to find a brand that won’t engage in special anniversary cigars.
One cigar maker that tends to defy convention, though, is Punch. Punch Cigars is famous for strong, complex blends crafted for everyday enjoyment. And the brand’s iconic jokester mascot — Mr. Punch — has masterminded a series of high-profile pranks and jests over the years.
So perhaps it’s not a surprise that to mark 25 years of the Rare Corojo line, Punch decided to do something a little different.
Punch Rare Corojo 25th Anniversary
Unlike many anniversary cigars, Punch Rare Corojo 25th Anniversary is not a limited edition. But more strikingly, it is an entirely different cigar from the original Rare Corojo.
This new blend is a Honduran Puro, and it contains authentic Corojo tobacco grown at the Eiroa Family Farm in Honduras. Rare Corojo 25th Anniversary offers fans a flavor profile defined by spice, cedar, and earth. And like most Punch Cigars, it pairs best with beer, specifically a West Coast IPA.
While Rare Corojo 25th Anniversary deviates in several ways from the original Rare Corojo, it does provide a familiar smoking experience.
Scott Abney, Brand Manager for Punch Cigars, said, “For over two decades, Punch fans have eagerly anticipated new Rare Corojo frontmarks and releases. Now, to celebrate 25 years on the shelves, we’re giving them a taste of a new blend that delivers that same signature Punch they know and love.”
Punch Rare Corojo
Few cigars stand the test of time. Many lines enjoy a few years of success before being quietly shelved or forgotten. Not so with Rare Corojo. Initially launched in 2001, Rare Corojo has delighted fans for decades with its uniquely smooth and spicy flavor profile.
For most of its existence, Rare Corojo was a perennial limited edition; that is, it would be available for sale in limited quantities every year. And over the years, it’s racked up a range of notable sizes, from the classic Rothschild (4.5 X 50) to the hefty El Doble (6 X 60) to the striking figurado, Aristocrat (6.125 X 54).
What didn’t change, though, were the remarkable Ecuadorian Sumatra leaves that act as the wrapper of Rare Corojo. These rare, reddish leaves impart a trademark spice that gives the original Rare Corojo its signature smoke. But don’t just take our word for it; Cigar Aficionado awarded this cigar a 92 rating.
The good news for fans of the brand is that both Rare Corojo and Rare Corojo 25th Anniversary are available on a full-time basis.

(5 days ago)@I really enjoyed the new Punch Corojo, it had a cocoa taste throughout and it burned evenly. This corojo had my attention from start to finish and I'd definitely smoke it again.

(14 days ago)Punch cigars are always of the highest quality, in terms of construction. The blends of tobacco are top notch, it depends upon your personal preferences. The Rare Corojo is one of my personal benchmarks. One of few cigars that I willingly pay full price for (this is a big deal as I am jaded by spending time working in the business, as well as being poor and frugal.)
I have almost always preferred maduro cigars, if I cannot have the extra body and richness, I may forgo a cigar. The Corojo is well rounded and flavorful without filling your head, overpowering your tongue. An all-time favorite.
