Solid Smoke, Start to Finish

Cigar Reviewed: Rocky Patel vintage 1990

Smoked at: Long Beach, MS

I cut and lit the Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 Toro and right away got notes of vanilla, cocoa, and a faint spice on the cold draw. The light went smooth, and the first few draws were nutty with a soft touch of coffee. Smoke output was solid. The burn line stayed mostly even, and the draw felt cool—a little surprising for a cigar that dark. It didn’t shift a lot in the first third, but it didn’t need to. The flavors were clean and balanced, and I could already tell the age on this cigar was doing the heavy lifting.

In the middle, the cocoa deepened into something closer to dark chocolate, and I picked up a subtle dried fruit sweetness—more like raisin than anything else, but not sweet in the way some cigars try to be. The spice didn’t come through as a full flavor, but there was a warm tingle toward the back of the palate that gave it a little dimension. The draw stayed good, though it did tighten a little after I pulled the band, which was unexpected. Still, it never got harsh or bitter, even as it warmed up near the end. I smoked it all the way to the nub without a single relight or touch-up.

Overall, it was about an hour-long smoke. It was smooth, mellow, and well-built from start to finish. I gave it four stars—not because anything went wrong, but because a good cigar and a great cigar aren’t the same thing. This one was good. Really good. The kind of cigar you’d be glad to have on hand for an evening wind-down or a quiet moment to yourself. It’s not showy, and it doesn’t try to be. It just smokes like something that’s been well-aged and made with care. And that’s worth something.
