Cigar Reviewed: Rocky Patel Special Reserve Sun Grown Maduro
Smoked at: Long Beach, Mississippi
This cigar looks as good as it smokes—dark, oily wrapper, solid box press, and a clean, sharp burn from the start. I picked up a strong dark chocolate bitterness early on that stayed consistent throughout the first third. There’s a little pepper in the background, but nothing overwhelming. Just enough to let you know it’s there.
Started with a tight draw that had me a little concerned, but I’m glad I stuck with it. The flavor came through right away—dark chocolate bitterness with just a hint of pepper on the retrohale. Rich, bold, and exactly what I’d hoped for. The construction was solid. Burn stayed even the whole time, and the ash held firm.
As it warmed up, the draw loosened slightly, and the smoke started rolling better. The flavor deepened too—notes of espresso, earth, and just a little sweetness tucked in there somewhere. It never got harsh, never wandered off. It stayed consistent, balanced, and satisfying.
By the final third, I was fully settled in. This cigar doesn’t need to be flashy—it’s confident in its flavor and well put together. That early tightness in the draw is the only thing keeping it from a perfect score. Everything else? On point.
Final word: This ended up being a wonderful smoke. Complex without trying too hard, and one I’ll definitely revisit. once again, Rocky did this one right.
