Rocky Patel Dark Star Robusto — A Cigar Worth Repeating

July 25, 2025 – Long Beach, Mississippi

This isn’t a first impression. I’ve smoked the Dark Star more than a few times, and it keeps earning its place. Today reminded me why. A rare July day on the Mississippi Gulf Coast gave me 83 degrees, low humidity, and the kind of weather that calls for a slow, solid smoke. I didn’t hesitate.

Appearance and Construction

This is a 5.5 x 50 Robusto with a traditional round shape and straight sides. The wrapper is a smooth Honduran Corojo with a milk chocolate hue and a natural, light sheen. Seams were tight, the triple cap was clean, and there were no visible flaws. The triple band is sharp and professional. Firm in the hand with no soft spots and a well-balanced pack.

Pre-Light and Cold Draw

I used a straight cut. Cold draw brought hay, a faint dried fruit note, and just a touch of barnyard. The draw was ideal—slight resistance, no effort needed. Toasting the foot gave off a warm cocoa aroma. Everything about the pre-light pointed to a clean, even burn.

First Third

The cigar lit evenly and immediately settled in. I got creamy coffee right off the bat, with earth underneath and a soft cocoa note riding along. A little cedar came through on the retrohale. There was a faint pepper, but it was perfectly balanced and never distracting. Strength was mild to medium. Body was medium-full from the richness of the smoke. Burn line was razor sharp and stayed that way all the way through.

Second Third

The flavors deepened but stayed clean. Wood became more present, and the sweetness from earlier tapered off. Coffee turned a little darker. Earth stayed consistent. I picked up a light mineral note, and the floral trace on the retrohale added a nice touch. Pepper was still there in the background, faint and steady. Draw remained perfect. Ash held strong in one-inch drops. The burn never wavered. Still no relights. Still no corrections.

Final Third

The cigar finished stronger. Dried fruit was gone. Cocoa became more dry. Wood took the lead, backed by that same earthy core. Strength edged up slightly but never got aggressive. The faint pepper note stayed smooth and clean. I smoked it to just over an inch before letting it go. The wrapper did split slightly at the butt, but I had pushed it as far as I could. I wasn’t ready to put it down. If I’d had a roach clip, I’d have kept going.

Burn and Performance

Absolutely no relights. Razor sharp burn line from start to finish. Ash held firm, dropped clean, and the draw never once changed. Smoke stayed cool. Wrapper split at the very end, likely because I smoked it longer than I should have. No bitterness at any point. The cigar held its structure and its flavor all the way through.

Overall Impression

The Rocky Patel Dark Star Robusto is one of the most consistent and satisfying cigars I’ve smoked this year. It gives you complexity without being busy. The transitions are clean. The flavor develops in layers. Coffee, cocoa, earth, wood, and a faint touch of pepper—everything shows up in order and holds its place. The strength stays in the medium range, with a little extra kick near the end, but it never tips the balance.

This one’s going to stay in my rotation. No hype. No gimmicks. Just a flat-out great cigar that performs every time.
