Cigar Reviewed: Perdomo Reserve 10th Anniversary Champagne Sungrown

Smoked at: Carolinas

The Perdomo Reserve Sun Grown Champagne is a beautiful cigar. It has a satiny chocolate brown wrapper with a striking and oversized gold, blue, and black band. The wrapper has very fine veins. The unlit draw oozes with honey and sweet tobacco. It lights fine, and has an easy draw. The first third of the smoke features cedar and sweet notes with plenty of smoke. In the second third some pleasant spiciness develops along with roasted wheat and nuts. The spiciness mellows in the last third and the nutty, woody, and sweet flavors dominate. This is what I'd call a medium bodied cigar. Even medium to mild. But it still has a lot of flavor. About half way through I opened a Bavarian dark beer. It was probably not the best pairing. The malty sweet beer seemed to overwhelm the sweeter notes in the cigar. If I had it to do over again, I'd pair this with a drier beer like a German Lager to let the sweet notes of the cigar shine through. Or perhaps I should have taken a hint from the name and had nice dry Champagne. The ash was long and mostly white. My one negative note is that I couldn't get this cigar to burn evenly. It required several touch-ups with the lighter. Still, it is a pleasant, flavorful smoke that I would readily enjoy again.
