The Introduction & Pre-Light Macanudo has long been the king of the approachable Connecticut shade, but the Macanudo Sumatra proves they know how to step into darker territory without losing their signature balance. Built around a core of Dominican and Nicaraguan fillers and held together by a U.S. Broadleaf binder, this Robusto relies on a dark Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper to completely change the narrative.
Visually, the stick presents a beautifully dark, smooth wrapper with an enticing oily sheen. The box press is well-executed but soft, lacking overly crisp edges, which makes it exceptionally comfortable to hold.
Off the foot, the aromas are rich and rustic, delivering heavy notes of barnyard and fresh turned earth—a clear indicator of well-fermented leaf. After clipping the cap with a shallow straight cut, the cold draw mirrors that earthy profile but introduces a distinct, sweet hint of dry Cocoa Puffs, setting the stage for what promises to be a robust, flavor-forward smoke.
The First Third The Sumatra wrapper makes its presence known the moment the flame touches the foot. The cigar opens with a sharp, immediate blast of cinnamon and warm baking spices. However, it quickly sheds that initial aggression, settling into a highly complex and enjoyable profile within the first half-inch.
The core of the smoke anchors around the rich earthiness promised on the cold draw, beautifully balanced by those lingering baking spices and a gentle, underlying sweetness. Pushing the smoke through the nose on the retrohale really brings the profile alive, highlighting a prevalent, zesty cinnamon note that wakes up the palate without being overpowering.
The Second Third & Construction Moving into the second third, the Macanudo Sumatra finds its sweet spot. The aggressive cinnamon and baking spices from the first few puffs retreat from the palate, though they remain wonderfully present if you push the smoke through the retrohale. In their place, that dry Cocoa Puff sweetness we picked up on the cold draw returns, blending seamlessly with the core earthiness to create a rich, dessert-like midpoint.
Mechanically, the cigar feels great in the hand with a nice, firm pack. Out of the gate, the initial draw was a bit tight for my standards, but a quick poke with a draw enhancer opened it right up. Once corrected, I never had another issue with the airflow. The burn line developed a slight wave to it, but it was entirely self-correcting and never required a lighter touch-up. The ash was structurally sound, easily holding on for over an inch at a time.
A Word of Warning: While the cigar itself is well-constructed, General Cigar went a little heavy-handed with the pectin on the secondary band. The glue was excessive enough that removing the band caused a minor tear in the Sumatra wrapper. I highly recommend smoking this one down until the cherry's heat softens that glue before attempting to peel it off.
The Final Third As the Macanudo Sumatra burns down to the nub, the profile shifts one last time. The cocoa and baking spices gracefully fade out, making way for a pleasant creaminess that begins to creep in. That great, rich earthy tone that anchored the cigar from the very first puff carries through to the end, keeping the smoke grounded and smooth without ever turning harsh or running hot.
The Pairing & Verdict A profile like this—heavy on the earth and cream—begs for a complementary beverage. A neat glass of scotch resting on the table beside you would cut through the earthiness perfectly, elevating both the dram and the stick. For those who prefer a non-alcoholic pairing, a good dark black coffee will draw out those earthy and creamy notes beautifully.
Ultimately, the Macanudo Sumatra Robusto delivers a full-flavored, medium-to-full-strength experience that makes it an easy recommendation. It is undeniably 5-pack worthy for any humidor. If you are already a fan of what an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper brings to the table, go ahead and confidently pull the trigger on a box.
Stay Smokey, and remember that time with a good cigar is never wasted.
