Empress of Cuba

Cigar Reviewed: Empress of Cuba

This one surprised me.

Right out of the cellophane, the Empress of Cuba Maduro felt substantial—solid weight, great hand feel, and easily outkicking its price tag. It’s got that rich AJ Fernandez signature look and quality. While I’m not usually into box-pressed cigars (and I’m honestly not sure if this was box-pressed or just packed tight), I can say this one won me over with construction alone.

First few draws hit smooth with cocoa and espresso-like tones, and the pepper took a back seat compared to other AJ blends. It had an earthy backbone with a hint of charred wood. A little hot in the second half, but manageable with paced draws. Nothing flashy, just a well-made cigar that does what it came to do.

This is an honest cigar—not trying to be more than it is. And that’s exactly why it lands a well-earned #17 on my list.
