Micallef Purple uses Nicaraguan, Mexican and Dominican filler, a Pennsylvania Broadleaf binder and is covered in a lightly oily Mexican San Andres Sumatra wrapper with tight seams and some veinage showing. The band is purple, of course, with silver trim, the Micallef shield and silver lettering.
Cedar, grassy earth, walnuts, mild spice with a bit of pepper, cocoa, and a gentle hint of toast, citrus and leather. There are some puffs that include honey, herbal, floral and steely mineral notes. More than enough to keep things interesting. It’s medium bodied and strength.
Slightly tight draw requiring a couple of toothpick pokes, smoke production adequate, reasonably even burn line, and grey ash that held well.
The Purple is an average cigar that started out well but went flat midway through the second third with many of the flavors disappearing. From that point on, the cigar had no transitions and minimal complexity. All that was left was earth, wood & pepper --- a 70s R&B band??? Wait. Maybe I don’t remember the 21st night of September.
I did smoke it through most of the final third hoping it would rebound, but it never really developed into what I expected. Of all the Micallefs I have smoked so far, it is my least favorite, which surprised me given how much I usually enjoy San Andres Sumatra.
