Celebrating National Cigar Day

February 27 — National Cigar Day — is a special day for anyone who loves cigars. Whether you work in the industry or just enjoy the occasional premium cigar, National Cigar Day offers all of us a chance to unwind and reflect on something we all love: cigars!

The Origins of National Cigar Day

National Cigar Day celebrates the achievements of a cigar legend, Oscar Hammerstein. Hammerstein was born in Germany but immigrated to the United States and rose to prominence as a businessman and a passionate supporter of opera and the arts. (He was the grandfather of Oscar Hammerstein II, of Rodgers and Hammerstein fame.) 

Before all that, though, he worked as a cigar maker. Over the course of his life, he claimed at least 80 patents, most of which were related to machines invented for making cigars. Indeed, he developed an air-suctioning component for cigar rollers and patented a cigar-making machine in 1881. 

While premium cigars were then and still are primarily a hand-made endeavor, the mechanization of the cigar process absolutely allowed for large-scale production and the development of the cigar industry today.
