Mexican tobacco is often rich, bold, and dark. Indeed, more and more cigars have Mexican San Andrés wrappers, which are perfect for Maduros and Oscuros. The primary growing region in Mexico is the San Andrés valley. Not only is the region world-famous for a sun-grown variant of Sumatra-seed tobacco, but its leaves are widely used as binder and filler in cigars.
While many brands have utilized Mexican wrappers for popular releases — Partagas, La Aroma de Cuba, Drew Estate to name a few — most cigar production comes from the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, and Honduras. As a result, there are relatively few cigars from Mexico (or Mexican cigars to put it another way).
Still, some Mexican cigars and even Mexican puros have made headway in the market recently.
And regardless, prized tobacco from the lush San Andrés Valley remains one of the finest sources of bold, dark tobacco in the world.
