Smoked around 8:30 a.m. \| South Mississippi heat already rising
Twelve-dollar cigar. I expected this one to hold up, and it did. The Edge line usually leans bold, but the Sumatra wrapper changes the game a little. This one was more refined. Still had the strength underneath, but it showed up different.
Cold draw surprised me with a fruity note. Something close to plum. That same flavor showed up in the first few draws. Light, but clear. Not something I’ve ever pulled from an Edge before. Definitely not what I expected, but I liked it.
Spice came early, but the pepper held back. Leather stepped in and stayed steady. Then about an inch in, the pepper finally pushed through. It didn’t rush in. It crept. Changed the profile without blowing out the other flavors. That timing was strange for this line, but it made the first third more interesting. The fruit faded right around then. Could’ve been overwhelmed or just gone.
Second third settled into baking spice. That flavor stuck around and carried the cigar for a while. Warm, smooth, steady. The draw was dead on and the burn line was just about perfect. I touched it up once near the end of the second third, but it never gave me trouble.
The heat was building by then. Humidity thick. Still, the cigar held its construction. I slowed my pace, trying not to rush it in the rising air. Even in that heat, the flavors stayed clean. No bitterness. No sour notes. Just consistent flavor all the way in.
Final third didn’t throw any surprises, but it didn’t fall off either. No rough edges. No tar buildup. Still smoking smooth. I was hoping it might shift again, but it stayed right where it was. Honestly, I was fine with that. Not every cigar needs a big finish. Sometimes staying steady is enough.
Somewhere during the smoke, a gray catbird landed close to the fence. I don’t see those often. Watched me for a minute, then flew off. Little moment I wouldn’t have had if I wasn’t out there. That’s the kind of smoke this was. Calm. Focused. Worth the time.
This one earns the 91 it got. I’d smoke it again without hesitation. The Edge Sumatra held its own.
