Sometimes it’s nice to try new things…

Cigar Reviewed: Hiram & Solomon Veiled Prophet Lancero

Smoked at: San Antonio, Texas

When I recently agreed to stand in for the regular employees at my shop and lounge while they were out sick, I was a little bit excited and a whole lot intimidated. I’ve enjoyed cigars for the better part of two decades, but I tend to stick to what I like…spicy sun grown maduros. And because cigars are an investment of my time as well as money, I rarely explore beyond my go-to selections. Suddenly I needed to know about more than what I like, and there’s a whole lot of cigars to learn about!

The approach I settled on was “smoke each lancero the shop carries”, and lemme tell you, it has been quite the adventure! I’m a lonsdale girl (when I can find them), and I’ve really gotten into perfectos and salomones recently, but the lancero might be my favorite “more accessible” vitola after this undertaking.

The Hiram & Solomon Veiled Prophet was the last lancero in the shop I needed to try. I’d saved it until last because I was unfamiliar with Arapiraca, and that made this cigar the farthest step out of my comfort zone throughout this whole process. I purposely avoided doing any research on the cigars I was going to smoke so that I didn’t have any preconceived notions, so as far as I knew, this stick could be anything!

What it ended up being was delightful. I’d quite enjoyed the Hiram & Solomon Traveling Man sumatra lancero a few days ago, and thought that would be hard to beat. I’ll have to smoke them both again, back to back, to see which one I prefer, but it wouldn’t surprise me if the Veiled Prophet wins that matchup.

I’ll definitely be seeking out more cigars with Brazilian Arapiraca wrappers, and recommend this cigar to anyone who enjoys a nice maduro. It’s not as spicy as my palate usually gravitates toward, but the blend was exceptional and a great mid-morning smoke.
