Cigar Reviewed: Micallef Red Toro
Smoked at: The Deck
Out of the box, the cigar has a nice brown appearance with a touch of red to it, and it might be my eyes playing tricks on me with the red band, too. The cigar has a nice feel to it with a slight toothiness to the wrapper.
With a straight cut, the draw is wide open, and the cold draw reveals a lingering sweet tobacco flavor. The light produces a rich earthiness with the sweetness still coming through, with a hint of baking spice on the retro. In the first third, a hint of salty leather builds along with the earthiness and sweetness. In the second third, the sweetness transitions into more of a dark chocolate flavor. The earthiness is still there, although I have picked up a hint of black tea flavor. The retro has picked up a white pepper to it as the baking spice falls away. In the final third, the earthiness has now fallen away, leaving a smoked meat flavor in its place. The sweetness earlier has been replaced with a toasted bread and honey note. The retro has lost the pepper and charred wood, and sweetness has taken over.
Overall, the cigar was medium to full-bodied throughout the smoke. The burn was good, but some slight touchups were needed during the smoke. The smoke output was pleasant throughout the entire cigar. The transitions throughout the experience were very lovely, especially for a Toro in this price range
