Micallef Red is another of the brand’s “color series.” This one features Nicaraguan & Mexican filler, a Nicaraguan grown Pennsylvania Broadleaf binder and covered in a mildly mottled, rough looking, slightly oily Mexican San Andres wrapper with fairly visible seams and veins popping. As you would expect, the color scheme of the band matches the name in the series – red background with gold lettering and shield logo.
Cedar. earth, mild pepper, coffee, cashews, bread. milk chocolate, and some fruit – berries and cherries. The pepper is clearly more pronounced during the second third and on the retrohale. I taste hints of citrus, graham crackers and honey or molasses on a puff or two. I may have tasted some cinnamon and mineral notes during the final third, but who knows, I may have had a buzz from the nicotine and the whiskey obstructing the palate. It’s a medium-full bodied, medium strength cigar.
The draw, burn line and smoke output were all thumbs up. The grey ash was a bit flaky but held reasonably well. Overall, good construction.
Glad I stumbled into the Micallef brand a couple of years ago at a cigar shop I rarely frequent. So far, so good. I’ve enjoyed every Micallef I’ve smoked. You can add Micallef Red to that list.
