Gran Reserva Rothschild Delivers

Cigar Reviewed: Arturo Fuente Gran Reserva

Smoked at: Long Beach, Mississippi

This was my first Arturo Fuente (I know. It makes me sound like a novice), the Gran Reserva Rothschild, and it ended up being one of the best cigars I have enjoyed in a long time. Out of the wrapper it looked sharp with a smooth, oily finish and tight seams. Cold draw gave me sweet tobacco and cedar.

The first few puffs set the tone. Cedar is there but not heavy, balanced with cream and a warm baking spice that never gets harsh. The smoke is smooth and easy. In the middle it opened up with toasted nuts and a touch of natural sweetness while the cream held steady. Burn was straight, ash stacked clean, and I never had to touch it up.

The last part brought deeper wood, a little earth and cocoa, and that cream stayed with it. The draw tightened some but a light massage opened it right back up, and I smoked it all the way down without bitterness.

I bought this in the New Orleans French Quarter (for those who may not know) and paid $15. That is more than this cigar usually runs, but if I had not known better I would have paid it again. Still, $8 sounds a lot better than $15.

Strength and body are medium, the flavors stay balanced, and the construction is excellent. It is smooth enough to be an everyday cigar but has enough character to feel special. I will be buying more, and next time I will reach for an 8-5-8 or Double Chateau to make it last longer.
