Good Cigar. But…

Cigar Reviewed: Cohiba Red Dot

Smoked at: Long Beach, MS

I lit up the Cohiba Red Dot with curiosity more than expectation. You hear the name, you see the price tag, and you wonder if it’s going to live up to the hype. In short — it’s a good cigar. But at that price? I’ve had better for less.

The construction was clean — firm with a slight give, evenly packed, and the wrapper looked sharp. The cold draw was smooth, offering a little cedar and something faintly sweet. Once lit, the draw was about perfect, and the first third came in light and balanced. Cedar, cream, and a mild baking spice showed up early — nothing bold, but pleasant.

The second third was more of the same. It didn’t evolve much, but it stayed consistent, which I can respect. A little nuttiness crept in, maybe almond, but it sat behind that same creamy cedar profile the whole way. The smoke was smooth, no bite, and the retrohale was clean and easy.

Burn stayed true throughout — no relights, no touch-ups, and the ash held just over an inch before I knocked it off. No complaints there.

By the final third, the flavors didn’t really change, but the cigar never turned bitter or sour either. It just coasted to a smooth finish. I enjoyed it. I really did.

But here’s the thing — there are plenty of cigars out there in the $8 to $10 range that would go toe-to-toe with this one and might even outshine it. The Red Dot is enjoyable, but for what you pay, you’re getting a name more than a memorable experience. It felt polished, but not personal. Refined, but a little too safe.

Would I smoke another one? Sure — if it was handed to me. But would I go buy a box? Not a chance. Not at this price.
