It took me several years to find this particular cigar. Caldwell Lost & Found Butter Maduro Toro is another Caldwell riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma. It’s supposedly part of the Pepper Cream Soda series blends of various Dominican fillers cloaked in a rustic, funky-looking Ecuador-Brazilian Arapriaca wrapper marketed as Maduro. Are we clear on this yet? The band refers to Sofa King Butter. Yes, I picked it up at a furniture sale. Now it could also stand for something banned in Boston if you slur the syllables.
There is the Caldwell logo on the back of the band. I often say that Robert Caldwell grabbed the Lost & Founds from a tobacco garage sale at a Dominican flea market. This one fits neatly into that description.
Flavors: A nice smooth, rich creaminess, cedar, bread/toast (guess that’s where the butter comes into play), leather, earth, honey sweetness/tobacco sweetness, and a touch of cocoa and soda crackers. Oak emerges, transitioning from the cedar and the cocoa becomes more chocolaty during the second third. I really didn’t expect this much flavor from this stick. There is some similarity to the original Pepper Cream Soda. A nice surprise! Perhaps it’s Pepper Cream Soda - The Missing Link. Did Darwin study the evolution of tobacco? It’s a med-full bodied, bold cigar.
Decent construction – good draw, could use a tad more resistance, some wrapper issues after removing the band but that have been my fault, good smoke output.
Caldwell Lost & Found Butter, like many of the L&Fs, is hit and miss. I’ve really enjoyed some. Other have been underwhelming. I put this stick in the latter category. Although the Butter flavors were there, they never really balanced as they have with previous smokes. Caldwell Lost & Founds can be inconsistent stick to stick. Just happened to grab a bad one from the humidor. File this under "better luck next time."
