Caldwell Long Live The King Mad Mofo

Smoked: Caldwell Long Live The King Mad Mofo

Smoked at: West Chester, Ohio

Being a fan of the Caldwell Long Live The King I had to try the maduro version, The Mad MoFo. The wrapper is a little rough with a few tiny veins. Looks good. The draw is about right until the last third where it actually tightened up. Some nice smoke output but nothing like the volumes of smoke from the Eastern Standard. The burn line was fine for the first third, then uneven throughout rest of the smoke. The stick needed a number of touchups. And yet the ash held tight until the last third when it fell off twice.

Although not marketed nor attributed as such in its vital stats, I found the Mad MoFo to be full strength – toward the end BEYOND full. More on that later.

Flavor notes: Nuttiness, mostly almonds, maybe walnuts, cedar, creamy, cocoa, thought I caught a raisin note in there, sweet floral notes and of course the pepper, although it is tamed by other spices, the wood and the nutty notes. There is a nice chemistry, complexity and balance between these flavors.

The strength ratchets up on the final third. This was a strong cigar from the start but it’s now shifted into high gear. I’m getting a serious nicotine buzz. As much as I’m enjoying the flavors, I can’t finish it. The flavors are now muted by the finish Nic buzz overload.

The Caldwell Long Live The King Mad MoFo was an enjoyable smoke until the strength got out of control during the final third. Maybe I’ll try it in a robust (if they’re available in that vitola). I know I can’t finish it in a Super Toro or a Magnum.

If you like the corojo Long Live The King, give the Mad MoFo a try. A lot of the same flavors, just dialed up along with the strength.
