Smoked: Blackbird Finch
Smoked at: West Chester, Ohio
Blackbird Finch Robusto uses Dominican filler, an Indonesian binder and is covered in a slightly oily sandpaper feel Sumatra wrapper with barely noticeable veins. The band is light orange on light blue grey with a cursive “Finch” sideways and silver on dark blue “Blackbird Cigar Co.” at the top with the blackbird logo in the corner. That blackbird is where you begin to unfasten the band. It’s very easy to tear it when removing it otherwise. The cigar is made by master blender Jonas Santana. Being a fan of the guitar maestro of the same last name ever since I heard “Evil Ways” on the radio in 1970, I had to smoke the Blackbird line.
Cedar, spice, pepper, some coffee and almond notes, and a hard to target sweetness - maybe vanilla. It’s mild to medium-mild bodied and strength. The pepper overtakes the spice profile by the final third. The flavors are basic and minimal, but there is balance even as it lacks complexity.
Decent open draw, crooked burn line by the second third, reasonable smoke output, and flaky ash that did fall twice.
Blackbird Finch is a reasonably enjoyable smoke. There’s nothing special in the blend, but it is a slightly better than average cigar, in my humble opinion.
