Wood is less of a tasting note in cigars than a “feeling.” Wood tasting notes are subtle and complement other natural flavors like earth, tobacco, and herbs. In other words, don’t expect a cigar with woody notes to taste like a tree or a 2 X 4 — it won’t.
Instead, woody cigars impart a natural smooth-saltiness. Sometimes, tobacco will pick up woody or oaky flavors as a result of aging within a whiskey or wine barrel. The subsequent hints of wood and oak will then interplay with spices or other naturally sweet notes.
