When we think about pairing a cigar, we usually think about what we are going to drink while we enjoy that delicious stick, but we were able to meet a man who thought differently. Mac, the Willy Wonka of cigar pairing chocolates, had the idea of using a sweet treat to pair with a cigar, and he hasn’t looked back since.
Mac is a very interesting man that we had the pleasure of meeting at PCA in NOLA this year. When approaching his booth, the energy that was given off was undeniable. Mac is a friendly, charismatic, kind and knowledgeable man who has experienced life in a unique way.
After serving in the military for 18 years, Mac became a member of the Secret Service, where he spent years protecting people such as George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton. This allowed him the ability to travel the world, meet people from every background, and experience different cultures. When he wasn’t occupied with keeping the leaders of our country safe, he spent time at his local cigar lounge. Mac is not a drinker, so he was experimenting with different chocolates to pair with his cigars, as Mac has a sweet tooth. The cigar lounge didn’t have chocolates, so he brought his own, which sparked the idea of offering this option in cigar lounges for their patrons.
Mac’s travels allowed him the opportunity to test out different cacaos from various countries, but the cacaos from the Dominican Republic were by far the best to pair with his cigars. Through Mac’s network of acquaintances, he connected with a chocolatier and got to work. He created BQ&S Gourmet Chocolates. These delectable treats are bite-sized chocolates in a variety of flavors, including Divine Cherry, Sapphire Blueberry, Almond Royal, Majestic Cashews, Prestige Crunch-Pretzel Balls, and Espresso Elegance. We tried each and every one of these flavors, and we tried many so that we could give you the best reviews… LOL. Each one is delicious and helps clear your palate after a cigar or complements its flavor while smoking. They are also in packaging that mimics the aesthetic you would expect to find in an upscale cigar lounge.
This year, Mac is focused on expanding his chocolate' market presence. PCA was just the start of his action plan, so you never know where you may run across the BQ&S booth.
