Cigar Reviewed: Macanudo Inspirado Green

Let me start by saying that my relationship with Macanudo has been less than friendly. My father-in-law loves ‘em- especially the mild stuff. Me? I like to hit my tastebuds over the head with gobs of smoke and flavor. Subtlety and nuance? Sure, whatever.

This stick ain’t your father-in-law’s mild and mellow stogie. I paired with some Bulleit bourbon, neat, and a fire. On pre-light draws I got a lot of wood, some sweet fruity notes, and earth. Upon lighting I was hit with a wall of flavor. Don’t let it fool you, this stick has got some dynamite hidden between the leaves. Lots of hay, campfire smoke, cedar wood, and earthy flavors on the first third- but not a hair over medium in body.

Color me impressed, I loved the blast of flavor. To my surprise the flavors rounded out a bit in the second third. Much more earth and cedar, some baked bread, and more campfire smoke but less ‘pow’ overall.

In the final third, there it hit me, the thing I love in a good cigar- leather. I’m a simple man, but the earthy and leathery tones together are all I need in a stick. That is what earns a spot in rotation in my humidor. I nubbed the cigar, which rounded out with more hay, earth, leather, and cedar. The campfire, much like my fire at this point, died down quite a bit.

Construction was flawless, the draw was easy, and the body was never much over medium. This is a quality cigar and one I would definitely like to try in a fatter ring gauge. Give it a shot, and maybe call your old man, but tell him to bring his own mellow sticks- this one won’t be what he’s used to.
