Making the Cut: V-Cut

At Cigar World, we take pride in obsessing over anything and everything cigars. And we mean every-thing.

That’s why we created our newest blog series called Making the Cut. We’ll explore the most popular (and obscure) styles of cigar cuts, explain how to do certain cuts on your cigar as well as compile the best cigar cutters so you can always make sure your smoking sessions are making the cut.

For our first topic, we’re covering one of the more uncommon styles of cigar cuts: the V-Cut.

What is a V-Cut?

A V-Cut cigar cutter is a style of cigar cutter that slices a “V” shape out of the head of the cigar. It’s also known as a wedge cutter or even a cat’s eye in some circles.

A V-Cut differs from a traditional guillotine style cut or a scissor cut due to the fact that as you draw a V-Cut pulls smoke from the top and the bottom of the cigar equally creating a bit more intensity and heat. Because of that, you may be able to experience tasting notes in ways you never have before.

How to V-Cut a cigar

A few things to keep in mind before using a V-Cutting your cigar. V-Cutters will work on most types of cigar shapes. However, do note, if you’re using a V-Cut on a Torpedo or tapered cigars, the draw may be a bit tight.

Also, if you’re a fan of cigars with large ring gauges, those may prove to be a bit of a challenge with a V-Cut cigar cutter, unless you’re using an oversized version. Always make sure to check the ring gauge limit before buying any cigar cutter.

One pro tip, you can use a V-Cut cigar cutter to create a really fun X-Cut by simply cutting the head of the cigar twice to create an X.
