When we launched Ash Quarterly a little over 2 years ago, we did so with the mindset to do it all differently.

One of the things that made us different was the decision to not do cigar reviews or ratings. The thought behind that was two-fold.
First off, we just don't believe that one person's (or a small group of like-minded people) opinion is more valuable than anyone else's and that it is not representative of the collective.
Taste is very subjective and my perfect cigar could be your yard gar and vice versa.
And secondly, there is a large belief that many reviews and ratings become skewed by personal relationships and financial gains through sponsorships and advertisements.
We never wanted to associate ourselves with that belief.

With all that said, there is no denying the attraction of cigar ratings. So between that and the constant feedback of wanting us to offer some sort of recurring monthly subscription (even though we are a quarterly magazine - it's even in the name after all), we came up with a solution.

We are launching our Monthly Cigar Rating Club on October 1st.

Each month we will ship out 3 cigars with a minimum MSRP of $40 (and the Ash Quarterly Magazine in months January, April, July, and October starting in 2021).
We will be changing our shipping dates to the beginning of each month rather than the end of the month.

This change will start with our Winter Issue that will ship at the beginning of January rather than the end of December.
Once we confirm that all subscriptions that month have arrived, we will send out an e-mail to those that purchased with a link to survey for ratings.

Our rating system will be based on 5 criteria (Appearance, Draw, Burn/Construction, Taste, and X-Factor/Bonus) with a possible score of 0-2 for each with a total possible score of 10.
Once we receive all surveys or by a set cut-off date, we will take the average of all scores for that cigar's rating. 3 months (or 9 cigars) of ratings will then be published in the Ash Quarterly magazine.
